With their minds on small budgets, homeowners are seeking cozier ways to live. This article is a guide for creating a small home for yourself. A cozy environment makes it necessary to save space, so it includes space-saving ideas as well.

What Is the Tiny House Movement?

The Tiny House Movement is a social and architectural movement that stresses simple living in small, even miniature homes. It is also known as the ‘Small House Movement.’ A ‘Tiny House’ has no definition as yet, but its proponents suggest that a residential building under 500 feet is a tiny home.

Houses in the United States became bigger over the decades. While the average house was about 1800 sq ft in the 1970s, it is about 2500 sq ft now. Consequently, people are beginning to feel the financial and environmental pinches of staying in a big home. The present lifestyle trend is living in houses that are less than 1000 square feet.

Origins

Tiny house owners credit English-born American architect Sarah Susanka with founding this movement. It gained traction when she published the book, ‘The Not So Big House.’ Another small house advocate, Jay Schafer, became well-recognized when he founded the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company and created the ‘tiny house on wheels’ in 2002.

Because of his innovation, people now enjoy living in mobile homes that embrace functionality and style. The earliest set of tiny houses sprung up in 2005, owing to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. Marianne Cusato designed Katrina Cottages as alternative trailers.

The concept sparked further interest in small houses. Perhaps what gave it the greatest push was the Financial Crisis of 2007 to 2008, when the benefits of simple living began to gain impetus. This movement is most popular in the United States.

That said, living in small spaces is a familiar, worldwide concept. Owing to the dearth of flat land in Hong Kong, people live in apartments that are less than 150 square meters. Space is scarce on the little island of Singapore as well. I live in a small apartment of about that size myself.

How to Build Your Own Tiny House Step-By-Step

There’s nothing more fulfilling than designing and building a space for yourself. Creating a cozy nook that you can call your own will satisfy you. If you want to know ways to build an efficient tiny house, these ideas will guide you.

1. The Planning and Sourcing stage

First of all, have a plan in mind. The first step of setting up a home, tiny or not, is planning. Decide if this lifestyle is right for you. Does everyone in your family want to live this way? If not, what concerns do they have? Have a chat with other homeowners about the advantages and pitfalls of going small.

Consider the essential features of your home and come up with a budget-friendly floor plan. Then start sourcing for suitable materials. You can take a tiny house on wheels anywhere. You will need a trailer if you wish to take your home with you everywhere you go.

Think about the design of your windows and doors. Get the tools and appliances you need ready. Consult small homeowners or knowledgeable friends

2. The Construction Stage

Trailer

Of course, you’ll have to select the site of your new home before putting it together. First of all, level the house on jack stands. Think about how often you’ll travel and If a deck is necessary. Before you start construction, make sure that you know where the access points are. These are points of entry for yourself and your contractors. Remember to remove material that you do not need.

Foundation

Creating a foundation for your home is important because it holds everything together. Begin by finding a flatbed trailer. Since this will serve as the foundation for your home, make sure that it’s sturdy. Construction experts recommend the dual axle flatbed trailer. Depending on its size, you are likely to spend between $2000 and $4,000.

Building the subfloor

Then, install the subfloor on top of the trailer. The best material to use for this process is lumber. You can then go on to sheathe it with plywood. Of course, an important part of the process is fastening it securely to the trailer. Use nuts, bolts, fasteners, and metal brackets. You may also want to use u-bolts. Purchase these materials in bulk because they will come in handy during all stages of construction.

Creating the shape of the house

Probably the most exciting stage of building a house is watching it take shape. Use the same materials that you used for your subfloor. Ensure that the frame conforms to it as well. Though it’s important to cut costs, don’t skimp on metal braces. These hold the frame together. Also, don’t worry about how your house will look because you won’t see them once it’s finished

Putting on the roof

Now it’s time to give the house a roof. Constructing a roof’s hard because you must raise it. Have u-bolts and metal brackets on hand. Make sure that you fasten it tightly. Metal is the best material for roofs because it’s weather resistant.

3. The finishing touches

Once the structure of the house is stable, it’s time for the finishing touches. Weatherproof your house. Waterproofing will prevent corrosion and keep your house dry. In the process of building your tiny home, this is a high priority.

Installing doors and windows

You’ll now need to install the doors and windows. Remember to level them off entirely. Use lots of tapes to seal the edges.

Seal the exterior and paint it

Once you’ve installed all the windows and doors, seal up the outside of your home with exterior grade plywood. You can also use a fibrous concrete board for cladding and sheathing. The fun begins here. You can paint these materials in your favorite colors

Install the plumbing and electricity

No home can function without power or plumbing. Make sure that you have installed the necessary pipes, plumbing drains, and electric wires.

Insulation

Also, make sure that your tiny home has top quality air. Use a VOC ( volatile organic compound) board. Such boards enable clean air to flow through the house. Try to cover the old clutch and nooks. Expanding spray foam will help with this.

Decorating

Finally, put your stamp on your small house. Bring in your favorite furniture, beautiful cushions, and paint the walls in your dream colors. If you wish, lay a prefinished wood floor on top of the plywood.

Space-Saving Ideas for Your Tiny House

If are going to build your own tiny house, you might want to know how to save space and make it look bigger. You can cram all your belongings into small spaces, but consequently, you’ll need some space-saving ideas.

1. Use the vertical space

First of all, your tiny home’s vertical space may make up for its lack of size. You can install a loft bed or fit a sitting area under the sloping area. You may also turn the walls into storage spaces.

2. Double-Duty fixtures

Your accessories can serve different purposes. You can use the kitchen sink to brush your teeth. A table can become a study and dining table.

3. Downsize

There’s no help for it. Going tiny means that you have to make a few compromises. Do so by using smaller appliances. You don’t need a large microwave oven or stove.

4. Use Storage Spaces Creatively

Also, many owners make the mistake of cramming their homes with storage furniture. Open storage works best for tiny homes. Of course, you can’t just throw your things in the cupboard to hide them. Baskets are functional works of art.

5. Get rid of clutter

You can hoard books if you have lots of space, but doing so in a tiny home is difficult. Much as you’d like to keep everything, sacrifices are necessary. Get rid of the things you do not need.

6. Use sliders

Sliders can hide almost anything. Some people put their massive 55-inch television sets behind them. Of course, these are flat-screen television sets.

7. Use the drop-down or foldable furniture

Moreover, furniture that disappears is best for tiny homes. Murphy Beds are an excellent example. Dropdown tables that you can push back when not in use will work as well.

8. Use bright light

Finally, the secret to making a tiny home look bigger than it is to use light. Where possible, use Windows to let in natural light. Use a lot of small light fixtures with white bulbs that create the effect of natural light. Your space will appear big, bright and airy.

If you’d like to build your own tiny house, these some space-saving ideas will make your little home a cozy, comfortable place for you and your family.

If you’re looking for ways to save space and cost, you may want to know what the tiny house movement is and even how to build your own small cozy home.
